ENRICHMENT

Lordswood Girls’ School & Sixth Form Centre offer a wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities, from sport and the arts, through to student leadership opportunities and community involvement.

 

Academic Enrichment

Lordswood Sixth Form Centre has excellent links with local universities.  Here is an example of some of the enrichment opportunities provided for our students:

 

Creative and Performing Arts

  • Annual school production
  • Music recitals
  • Support in submitting work to the Royal Academy online summer exhibition and competitions.
  • Opportunities to exhibit work in external spaces.
  • "Trip to London galleries. A day in London visiting two of the UK's best known galleries.
  • Visit to Birmingham galleries. A trip to see local art shows which takes place during a double lesson.
  • Theatre trips: London, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester and Wolverhampton
  • Drama trip to Disneyland Paris
  • Digital special effects workshop for film and media students from the BCU school of media
  • Art degree show viewing at BCU campuses in the summer term
  • Workshops delivered by the Barber Institute of Fine Arts and the option to join their youth group.
  • University masterclasses, practical workshops with art lecturers at local universities
  • 'The Creative Process' - a university seminar during which 4 famous artists talk about their art practice

 

English and Humanities

  • A Level History Film Club
  • Politics Film Club

  • Visit to parliament
  • English lecture days/conferences on set examination texts in Birmingham, Warwick  University, London
  • Peer mentoring opportunities to support KS3/KS4 students in their English lessons
  • English set text - film showings and discussions
  • UoB master-classes - For example, the most recent master-class focused on ""Life after Brexit""; In June 2016 the UK decided to leave the European Union and now that ‘Article 50’ is triggered there will be a two-year period in which the conditions of exit will be negotiated. What does Brexit actually mean and what will the economic, social and political consequences be for the UK?"
  • Oxbridge Lecture - Assistant Professor of History visits to give a lecture on the role of China in the Cold War and beyond to support Year 13 students selecting this topic as a focus for their history coursework, although all students within Humanities are welcome to attend."
  • Peer mentoring to support year 10 and 11 students with essay writing skills, understanding difficult concepts, organisation and revision strategies for the History or Citizenship GCSE.

 

STEM

  • United Kingdom Mathematics Trust - Senior Challenge
  • Visit from the University of Warwick to run a molecular genetics practical lesson
  • Visit to the German Markets to understand business practices
