Year 11 BTEC First Award in Health and Social Care

What is the qualification?

Vocational qualification worth 1 GCSE, graded pass, merit, distinction and distinction*

 

What will I be doing on the course?  How will it be structured?

This is a qualification that is made up of units that are assessed in a variety of ways. For the award, you will be completing four units. The majority of units are coursework based and you will be given assignments with a series of tasks to complete. Your work is then either marked as pass, merit, distinction. There is one externally examined unit, Human Lifespan Development, which will be graded pass, merit or distinction depending on your achievement.

  • Health and Social Care Values
  • Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
  • Promoting Health and Wellbeing

 

Assessment

Year 10

Autumn and Spring Terms: Continuous coursework

Summer Term: Continuous coursework plus the option of sitting the externally examined unit.

 

Year 11

Autumn Term: Continuous coursework

Spring Term: Continuous coursework plus the option of resitting the externally examined unit.

Summer Term: Continuous coursework plus the option of sitting the externally examined unit.

 

What skills do I need to develop to be successful at this course?

To be successful you will need to be very organised because all of the coursework units will have strict deadlines. You also need to be able to work independently as well as part of a group.

 

What could I use this qualification for?

If you achieve a Level 2 pass or better it is then possible to progress on to Level 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care post-16. It could also help you to enter the apprenticeships and traineeship routes in Child Care, Social Care work or work in the health sector. You will also be able to use the transferable skills such as self-reflection, communication, teamwork and problem solving to other areas of study.
