FUTURE LEADERS, THE UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN'S CENTRE, GHANA

Future Leaders Underprivileged Children’s Centre in Ghana is based just outside Ghana’s capital city, Accra, and offers education and support to children living in poverty.  The centre currently helps approximately 350 children and young people who would, under their current circumstances, not get the opportunity to attend school.  The centre teaches early years and primary education classes, runs five football teams and has two enterprise centres for hairdressing and seam stressing.  The charity also raises money to send children to Junior High school once they have completed the primary education programme delivered at the centre.

Lordswood Girls’ school have supported this small charity for the past eight years and have been instrumental in funding the continuation of its good work. Students at Lordswood have generously taken part in fundraising activities such as non-uniform days, cinema evenings, sponsored walks, making crafts for sale, penny collections and parents are invited to take part in our termly family quiz evenings and annual fashion shows.  The money raised at these events goes directly to the charity and is used to cover the running costs of the centre, for example, the teachers’ wages, exercise books and new uniforms.

Our link with the charity does not stop there, each year group at Lordswood sponsor a child at the UCC and write letters to their sponsor once a year. The children in Ghana love receiving these letters and are always excited to find out about what our students do at school. The children studying at Future Leaders UCC write letters back and these are shared as part of a registration session delivered by review tutors which gives our students an insight into what life in a different country and culture is like. The connection between the children at Lordswood and the UCC is something that we are keen to foster and so when our students reach the sixth form they are given the opportunity to travel with a member of staff to Ghana and take part in a four week placement as volunteers. During the placement there are countless chances to learn about Ghanaian culture, develop confidence in teaching younger children and build lasting relationships with the children and staff at the UCC.
